These are some of the books our books editor received recently. They may be reviewed later Follow by Terence Livingston (Port Hole Publishers, price not available) This is Terence Livingston’s first novel and it is the first in a trilogy. It is a book that seeks to tackle the question of how far a dream can take you. Described as reminiscent of The Pilgrim’s Progress and The Lord of the Rings, the novel follows the main characters on a spiritual journey. Aram is the dreamer and the protagonist and despite being called a fool, he is determined to follow his vision. He sets out with his wife and best friend across unknown territory to a place where he hopes his dream might come true. But along the way, Aram, Lilu and Merkad learn that truth can sometimes lead through darkness, before the light is finally found. What follows is a story for all who have ever dreamed of great things, set out to achieve them, and then wondered if they followed after the wind. An Honourable Man by Gillian Slovo (Virago, price not available) Set in 1884 Khartoum and London, An Honourable Man is a novel about Empire and the folly of the endeavour. A general is locked in his fortress in the besieged city of Khartoum – determined to fight the Mahdi to the death. The Camel Corps embark on an expedition to rescue General Gordon and are accompanied by a young doctor who has abandoned his wife Mary in London to pursue his dream of living a hero’s life. In London, Mary finds herself adrift and isolated. Her only release is in the drug laudanum to which she quickly becomes addicted. It is this addiction that takes her into the darkest corners of London. An Honourable Man promises to be a compelling read. The Secret Chamber by Patrick Woodhead (Random House Struik, R115) An English doctor disappears in the impenetrable forests of northern Congo. Luca is ordered by his Intelligence chief uncle to leave the Himalayas for Congo to find him. But Luca has his own ghosts to deal with as he struggles to live with the guilt he feels for his part in the death of his best friend. Meanwhile, Beatrice (Bear) Makuru wants to head into the wilderness to find out why coltan mines are being blown up. The two set out together on different missions. They uncover a secret so simple yet so startling it could rock the foundations of the civilised world. The Bomber by Liza Marklund (Random House Struik, R195) Crime reporter Annika Bengtzon is covering the story of the bombing of the Olympic Stadium in which a victim is blown to pieces. Then there is a second explosion and her police source reveals they are hot on the heels of the bomber. Annika is guaranteed an exclusive – every reporter’s ultimate prize. But soon she realises that because of what she knows, she has become the target of a serial killer. Rhumba by Elaine Proctor (Quercus, R195) Flambeau is searching for his mother in the streets of London. His plight attracts the attention of Congolese gangster Knight and his girlfriend Eleanor. Eleanor becomes Flambeau’s confidante while he begins to mentor her in the art of rhumba – the dance she believes will help her win her lover’s heart. Knight himself may have the connections to find Flambeau’s mother, but with his troubled past and precarious present, it is not so easy. It could mean more trouble and heartache for the young Flambeau. Cruel Crazy Beautiful World by Troy Blacklaws (Jacana, price not available) At the heart of Cruel Crazy Beautiful World is the theme of xenophobia. The story is set in South Africa in 2004. Jerusalem is half Muslim, half Jew, a student and a poet. He goes head-to-head with his father who refuses to pay for his unfocused studies and instead ships him off to Hermanus to sell curios to tourists. Here he takes a Tanzanian refugee boy under his wing and falls for the beautiful Lotte. In a parallel story, Jabulani, a Zimbabwean teacher has left his home country in disgrace after he mocked President Robert Mugabe. He comes to South Africa to rebuild his life. But he is being pursued by Ghost Cowboy – a murderous albino. – Meneesha Govender
